Students With Special Needs

Piano for Students with Special Needs

Before becoming a full time piano instructor, I worked intensely with children with special needs (including autism, using the Applied Behavioral Analysis model). During this time I was employed as an Ed. Tech. at the Reach School in South Portland, and then the Mabel I. Wilson School in Cumberland. Seeing the effects that music has on children with special needs,  I wanted my studio to be inclusive to this population. I believe that learning to play piano, or engaging in purposeful musical activities with intention can lift self-esteem, lower anxiety, and bring joy.

It is important to note that I am not a Certified Music Therapist. The credentials needed for that are way above my knowledge and expertise! Please visit www.mainemusicandhealth.com for information and access to Music Therapy. However, I am comfortable and experienced with children and adults with certain diagnosis, and am happy and excited to modify lessons to create a successful experience. I strongly believe that all students should have access to the benefits of piano and/or general music lessons (using piano as the driving force); my work with special needs students in a school setting has enhanced this vision and provided valuable experience.

I adapt instructional methods in my piano lessons based on the student's individual strengths and learning styles. Access to a student’s IEP is very useful in helping me craft my lesson plans and yearly goals.
